AI for small business owners

What can you build with AI as a small business owner?

A small business owner can use an AI coding tool such as Claude Code to build simple single-page tools from a plain-English description: a quote calculator that gives a tidy printable quote, a menu or price list that works on a phone, tablet or paper, and a booking-request form that turns a request into a ready-to-send email. These take about ten to fifteen minutes each and need no coding. They are not the right way to build anything that takes payments or stores customers’ private details without a knowledgeable person checking it.

Facts checked 2026-10-11. Tools and prices change, so we date this.

What makes a good first build

The best things to build are the little jobs that eat your evenings and that you can describe in a few sentences: working out a price, showing what you offer, collecting what you need to know before a booking. You can check the result with your own eyes, and if it is wrong, nothing bad happens.

Each of these is a single web page. You open it by double-clicking, you can print it or put it on a counter tablet, and you change it by telling the AI what to adjust.

Three builds that work

A quote calculator. You give it your prices, such as a rate per room and extras, and you pick the options while you are on the phone. It shows the total and a line-by-line breakdown, and prints a clean one-page quote with the customer’s name and the date. You quote the same way every time, and faster.

A menu or price list. A cafe menu, a treatment list or a rate card, laid out to look good on a phone, a tablet or paper. When a price changes you ask for the change and it is done, with no printer bill and no waiting on a designer.

A booking-request form. The customer, or you on the phone, picks a service and a day and gives a name and number. A button turns it into a short, polite email you can copy and send. Each request arrives complete, so there is less back and forth.

Making it fit your business

Start from a made-up business and made-up prices, get the shape right, then tell the AI about yours. For example: "Change it for my business, I am a dog groomer, and I charge by the size of the dog plus extras like nail trimming." Doing it in that order means you are judging a working page, not describing from a blank screen.

We have the exact message to paste for each of these, with a working example you can open first, on our page for small business owners.

What not to build with it yet

These pages are deliberately simple. They do not save anything between visits, take payments, send real email by themselves or keep a customer list. That is on purpose, because those are the parts where a mistake costs real money or exposes someone’s private information.

If you want a full online shop, a booking system with accounts or anything that handles card details, use a service built for that, or bring in a person who can review it before it goes live. AI can also be confidently wrong, so check every price and every total against your own numbers before a customer sees them.

A first build in fifteen minutes

Try the quote calculator first, since the result is easy to check.

  1. Set up Claude Code in the Claude desktop app, in Manual mode, with an empty folder for the project.
  2. Paste a description of the quote calculator with made-up prices and ask for a single page you can open by double-clicking.
  3. Open the page and test it with a few jobs where you already know the right price.
  4. Tell it about your real business and prices, and ask for one change at a time.
  5. Print a test quote and read it as a customer would.

Questions people ask

What can a small business owner build with AI?

Simple single-page tools such as a quote calculator, a menu or price list, and a booking-request form that produces a ready-to-send email. Each takes about 10 to 15 minutes and needs no coding.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You describe what you want in plain English and the AI writes the page. You do need to test it against numbers you know before customers see it.

Can AI build me an online shop or take payments?

Not safely on your own. Anything that handles payments or customers’ private data should come from a service built for it, or be reviewed by a knowledgeable person before it goes live.

What does it cost?

Building files on your computer needs a paid Claude plan, such as Pro at about $20 a month at the time of writing. You can try the free chat first to see if it suits you.

Will AI get my prices right?

Not automatically. It can make arithmetic or wording mistakes and sound sure about them. Test the tool with jobs where you already know the right price.
