For a beginner, Claude Code costs the price of a paid Claude plan: Pro is $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month if you pay for the year up front, at the time of writing (October 2026). The free plan does not include Claude Code. There is no separate charge on top of the plan, but every plan has usage limits, and building uses them up faster than chatting does. Prices change, so check claude.com/pricing before you pay.

The short answer
You pay for a Claude subscription, and Claude Code comes with it. As of October 2026, Anthropic lists Pro at $20 a month if you pay monthly, or $17 a month if you pay $200 for the year at once. Max starts at $100 a month and is for people who use it heavily every day. Team plans exist for groups.
A beginner who builds a few small things a week is the person Pro is meant for. You do not need Max to start, and it is easy to upgrade later if you keep hitting the limit.
What the free plan does and does not do
The free plan lets you chat, and it can make small things inside the chat window. Anthropic’s pricing page does not include Claude Code in it, which means it cannot create files in a folder on your computer.
So the sensible way to try before you pay is to use the free chat first. Ask it to build you something small, such as a one-page planner, and see whether this kind of help is worth money to you. If you like what you see, the paid plan is the same thing with the ability to save the result on your machine.
What the limits feel like
A subscription is not unlimited. Pro and Max each have a limit that resets every five hours, plus a weekly limit, and the usage is shared between Claude chat and Claude Code. Building eats into it faster than talking, because the AI reads and writes a lot behind the scenes while it works.
In practice you will see a message saying you have hit your limit and when it resets. Nothing you made is lost, because your files are still in your folder. If it happens often, you can wait, switch to a bigger plan, or turn on extra usage, which lets you pay for more once your plan’s allowance runs out. Extra usage is optional and has a spending limit you can set.
The other way to pay, and why a beginner should skip it
Claude Code can also be paid for by usage, per token, through a developer account. That is how some businesses do it, and the bill depends on how much you use. Anthropic’s own figures for companies are around $13 per developer per active day, which describes a developer working all day on large projects, not you building a quiz on a Sunday.
For a beginner, a flat subscription is easier to predict. One more thing to know: if your computer has a developer key saved under the name ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, Claude Code may use that and bill you per use instead of using your plan. If you never set one up, you do not have one.
How to get more out of what you pay for
A few habits make the allowance go further.
- Start a fresh chat when you switch to an unrelated task. A long conversation carries all its history into every message, which uses more.
- Be specific. "Make the heading bigger on the home page" costs less than "improve my site".
- Do one change at a time and check it, so you do not pay to rebuild something that went the wrong way.
- When you see a warning that you are near the limit, ask for a short handoff note you can paste into a new chat later.
Questions people ask
How much does Claude Code cost per month?
Claude Code is included in paid Claude plans. At the time of writing (October 2026), Pro is $20 a month billed monthly or $17 a month billed annually, and Max starts at $100 a month. Check claude.com/pricing for current prices.
Is Claude Code free?
No. The free Claude plan does not include Claude Code. You can try the free chat to see whether AI building is useful to you, then move to a paid plan to build files on your computer.
Do I pay extra for each thing I build?
Not on a subscription. You pay the plan price and have a usage allowance that resets. You only pay more if you choose to switch to a bigger plan or turn on optional extra usage.
What happens when I hit my limit?
You see a message saying so and when it resets. Your files are safe. You can wait, upgrade, or turn on extra usage if you want to keep going.
Is the Pro plan enough for a beginner?
Usually yes. Pro suits someone building a few small things a week. If you hit the limit often and it is slowing you down, that is the signal to look at a bigger plan.
