Claude Code is an AI tool from Anthropic that builds things on your own computer from plain-English instructions: you describe a small web page, tool or document, and it creates the files while you watch and approve each change. You do not need to know how to code, and you do not need a terminal, because the Claude desktop app has a Code tab that does the same job with ordinary buttons. You do need a paid Claude plan (Pro is about $20 a month), because the free plan cannot build on your computer.

What it actually is
Most people have used AI as a chat: you ask, it answers. Claude Code is the next step. Instead of only telling you how to make something, it makes it. It can create a web page, a quiz, a budget tracker or a small tool, save it as files in a folder on your computer, and change it when you say what to adjust.
The name sounds technical because it was first made for programmers, and it still works in a terminal for those who like that. But the part that matters to you is the same either way: you write in normal sentences, and it does the building.
Do you need a terminal?
No. A terminal is a plain window where you type instructions instead of clicking. Programmers use it out of habit. The Claude desktop app has a Code tab that gives you the same tool inside a normal app window, with a message box and approve buttons.
If an AI ever tells you to open a terminal and paste something you do not understand, you can say so. Ask it to do that step for you, or to find a way that only needs clicking.
What it costs, honestly
Building on your computer needs a paid plan. Claude Pro is about $20 a month at the time of writing, and prices change, so check the current number on Anthropic’s site before you commit. The free plan can chat and make small things inside the chat window, but it cannot create files on your machine.
If you are not ready to pay, you lose nothing by trying the free chat first. Ask it to build you something small and see whether this is worth it to you.
Your first twenty minutes
This is the whole path, in the order that trips fewest people up.
- Download the Claude desktop app from claude.ai/download (Mac or Windows). It installs like any normal app.
- Sign in, then open the Code tab at the top of the app.
- Set the mode picker, under the message box, to Manual. In Manual mode Claude shows you each change and waits for your yes, so nothing happens behind your back. Keep it there for your first builds.
- Make an empty folder on your Desktop and call it my-first-project. When Claude asks which folder to work in, pick that one. A folder you made on purpose, with nothing in it, is the safest home for a first build.
- Type what you want in plain words, for example: "Make me a one-page weekly meal planner I can open in my browser. Ask me two questions first." Read what it proposes, approve what looks fine, and say what to change.
The one skill that matters
After the first build, almost everything is the same move: say what you want in rough, honest words, look at what comes back, and say what to change. Then repeat. You are not writing code and you do not need the right vocabulary. "Make the buttons bigger and the colors calmer" is a complete instruction.
The first version is a draft, not a verdict. If it looks nothing like the picture in your head, that is normal: it could not see your picture. Ask it to show you three different looks and pick one.
What to be honest about
It makes mistakes. It can confidently tell you something works when it does not, and in a long session it can forget what you agreed earlier. Treat what it builds as a draft you check, and ask it to critique its own work.
It is best for personal and small-scale things: a planner, a quiz for your class, a page for your business. If something you build will hold other people’s private information or take payments, get a knowledgeable person to look at it before you put it online.
And it agrees too easily. If you want the honest answer, say so: ask what is wrong with your idea before you ask how to build it.
Questions people ask
Can I use Claude Code without knowing how to code?
Yes. You describe what you want in plain English and Claude writes the code. You never have to read it. What you do need is the habit of looking at the result and saying what to change.
Do I need to use the terminal to use Claude Code?
No. The Claude desktop app has a Code tab that works with a normal message box and approve buttons. The terminal version exists for programmers, but it is optional.
Is Claude Code free?
No. Building on your computer needs a paid Claude plan, such as Pro at about $20 a month at the time of writing. The free plan can chat and make small things inside the chat, but not files on your machine. Check Anthropic’s site for current pricing.
Can Claude Code break my computer?
It is very unlikely if you follow two habits: keep it in Manual mode so it asks before every change, and point it at an empty folder you made for the project. It then only works inside that folder.
What should I build first?
Something small and personal that you will actually use, such as a weekly planner, a budget for one month or a quiz for a class. A first win matters more than an impressive project.
What if I get stuck or it stops making sense?
Ask Claude to stop and explain in plain words where you are. If the chat has got long and it drifts, ask for a short summary, paste it into a fresh chat and carry on from there.
