What is vibe coding

What is vibe coding, explained simply

Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want to an AI in plain language and accepting what it produces, instead of writing the code yourself. The term was coined by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy in February 2025 for a style where you go with the flow and barely look at the code. For a beginner it means you can make a small working tool by talking, as long as you test the result and know it is a draft.

Facts checked 2026-10-08. Tools and prices change, so we date this.

What the word means

In Karpathy’s original post, vibe coding meant giving in to the flow: you tell the AI what you want, accept what it writes without reading it closely, and when something breaks you paste the error back and let it fix things. The code is something that happens in the background.

The word has since stretched. Today people use it for almost any building with AI where the person is mostly directing and the AI is mostly writing. That broader use is the one that matters for beginners.

What it looks like in practice

You say what you want: "a one-page site for my dog-walking business, with a price list and a contact button". The AI builds it. You look, then say: "make the prices bigger, and the colors calmer". It changes it. That is the whole loop, repeated until you are happy.

You never need the vocabulary. "It looks cramped on my phone" is a complete instruction. The skill that grows is taste and clear description, not syntax.

What it is good for

Personal tools, small business pages, classroom materials, prototypes and anything where the worst outcome is "I try again". It is a very fast way to turn an idea into something you can click, which is often what you need to find out whether the idea is any good.

Where it goes wrong

If you accept code you never understand, you cannot tell when it is wrong. AI-built software can look finished and still hide errors, security holes or things that quietly do not work. The risk grows when the thing handles private information, money or many users.

The fix is not to learn to code. It is to test with your own eyes, ask the AI to critique its own work, keep it in a mode where it shows each change, and bring in a knowledgeable person before anything serious goes live.

How to try it today

The shortest path for someone who has never coded:

  1. Install the Claude desktop app and open the Code tab (it needs a paid plan, such as Pro at about $20 a month at the time of writing).
  2. Make an empty folder and select it when asked.
  3. Describe one small thing you would use. Ask it to ask you two questions first.
  4. Review each change it proposes, and answer in ordinary words.

Questions people ask

Who invented the term vibe coding?

AI researcher Andrej Karpathy used it in a post in February 2025 to describe building with AI while barely reading the code.

Is vibe coding real programming?

It is real building, with real working output, but it is a different skill from traditional programming. You direct and judge instead of writing every line.

Is vibe coding safe?

For small personal projects the risk is mostly wasted time. For anything handling other people’s private data or payments it is not safe on its own, and someone knowledgeable should review it first.

Do I need to know how to code to vibe code?

No. You need to describe things clearly, look at the result, and say what to change.

What tools do people use for vibe coding?

Common ones include Claude Code, Cursor and OpenAI’s Codex, among others. Our comparison page helps you pick one as a beginner.
