Claude Code, ChatGPT and Cursor can all build things from plain-English instructions, and for a complete beginner the difference is mostly how easy the first hour feels. Claude Code (inside the Claude desktop app) and ChatGPT with Codex are the simplest starts for someone who has never coded; Cursor is a coding-focused app that suits people who expect to look at code. Each has a paid plan at about $20 a month at the time of writing, so pick the one whose first hour you enjoy.

The short version
If you want one pick: start with the one that lets you finish a small project this weekend with the least confusion. For people who have never opened a terminal, that is a desktop app with a message box and approve buttons, which describes the Claude desktop app well. Cursor is built around a code editor, which is wonderful if you plan to learn to read code and a lot of screen if you do not.
The skills (describing clearly, checking the result, asking for changes) are the same in all three. Nothing you learn is wasted if you switch later.
Claude Code
Claude Code lives in the Code tab of the Claude desktop app, next to Chat and Cowork. You choose a folder, describe what you want, and in Manual mode it shows each change and waits for your approval. You need a paid plan: Pro is about $20 a month at the time of writing, and Max starts at about $100 for heavy use.
Good for: first-time builders who want a calm, step-by-step feel. Watch out for: usage limits are shared with the rest of your Claude use, so a long building session can use up your allowance.
ChatGPT with Codex
OpenAI says Codex is included in ChatGPT plans: Free, Go (about $8 a month), Plus (about $20 a month) and Pro (from about $100 a month). If you already pay for ChatGPT, trying it costs you nothing extra. There is a ChatGPT desktop app as well.
Good for: people already in ChatGPT every day. Watch out for: limits differ by plan, so check what your plan allows before you plan a big project.
Cursor
Cursor is a desktop coding app with an AI agent built in, and it can use models from several companies. It has a free Hobby tier with limited agent use, and a Pro plan at about $20 a month.
Good for: people who want to see and learn the code as they go, or who expect to work with a developer. Watch out for: it is built for programmers, so the screen has more going on than a first-timer needs.
Which to pick, by situation
Never coded, want the gentlest start: Claude Code in the desktop app, or ChatGPT with Codex. Already pay for ChatGPT: try Codex first. Curious about how code works and want to learn it: Cursor. Not sure: use the free tiers for one small project each and keep the one you enjoy.
We should be honest about our own choice. The set-up on this site uses Claude, because we know it best and its desktop app was the easiest way we found to take someone from nothing to a first build. That is a judgment, not a verdict, and the others are good tools.
