Claude Code permission denied

Claude Code keeps asking for approval, or says “permission denied”

Those are two different things. The approve prompts mean Claude Code is in Manual mode: it shows each change and waits for your yes before it edits a file or runs a command. “Permission denied” is a message from your computer, not from Claude: something the app tried to open was off limits, usually a folder it has not been allowed into or one outside the project folder you chose. Neither means you did something wrong.

Why it keeps asking you to approve

In Manual mode, Claude starts with read-only access. When it wants to edit a file, run a command, or fetch something from the web, it stops and asks. That is the safety net doing its job, and it is the reason we suggest starting there.

Each prompt shows what it is about to do, and you can say yes this once, or say yes and stop asking for that kind of step. If a prompt does not make sense to you, say no and ask it to explain first. Saying no is allowed.

If the prompts feel like too many

A lot of prompts early on is normal, because even a small build means many edits. You have two honest options. Keep clicking while you learn what the steps look like, which is the safest. Or, once you have done a few builds and trust the empty project folder you are working in, choose “yes, and don’t ask again” on the routine file edits so you are asked less often.

There are looser permission modes, and they exist for people who are comfortable reviewing the result afterwards. For a first month, Manual is the one to stay in.

What “permission denied” means

This one is your computer talking. It is refusing to let the app read or write something. For a beginner, the usual causes are: the app has not been allowed into that folder yet (on a Mac, a folder like Desktop or Documents can ask separately for permission), the file belongs to something else on your computer, or Claude tried to work outside the folder you picked for the project.

It is not a sign you broke anything, and nothing you made is lost. Ask Claude to say in plain words what it was trying to open and why, rather than letting it try workarounds you cannot judge.

What to do, in order

Go through these gently, one at a time.

  1. Stop and read the message. Ask Claude which folder or file it was about, in plain words.
  2. Check that you picked a folder you made for this project, and that the project is inside it, not elsewhere on your computer.
  3. If your computer shows a box asking whether the app may access a folder, allow it for that folder only.
  4. If it still happens, ask Claude to work only inside the project folder and to walk you through any setting one click at a time, waiting for you to say it is done.
  5. Never approve a step you do not understand just to make the message go away.

Questions people ask

Why does Claude Code keep asking me to approve things?

You are in Manual mode, where it asks before editing files or running commands. This is the safety feature working as intended.

Can I stop the approval prompts?

You can approve a routine kind of step so it stops asking, or use a looser permission mode. For a beginner, staying in Manual mode for the first builds is safest.

What does “permission denied” mean in Claude Code?

Your computer refused to let the app open or change something, usually a folder the app has not been allowed into or one outside the project folder you chose. It is not a Claude mistake or something you did wrong.

Is it safe to approve everything?

Not blindly. Each prompt shows what Claude is about to do. If you do not understand a step, say no and ask for a plain explanation.

Did I lose my work when I saw permission denied?

No. The message means an action was blocked. Files you already made are still in your project folder.
